These days, fantasy football prizes and punishments are sometimes incredibly extreme, thanks to comedy shows like The League. Thankfully, one fantasy football punishment turned into a cause for good when it led to a $1,000 tip for a waitress who needed it!
The Silver Lining In Finishing Last
Mike Carsley, a salesman from Atlanta, loves playing fantasy football with his friends. Well, he did. This year, sadly, he came in last place. The punishment for the loser? Simple: spend 24 hours in a Waffle House. However, there was a catch – for every waffle eaten, the loser could take an hour off the 24-hour punishment.
As soon as Carsley posted about his punishment on Facebook, he was flooded with friends and family willing to help him out with the horrible punishment. Most of all, people wanted to help him pay for the waffles. After all, the salesman planned on eating 21 pancakes over the course of 3 hours. Not only is that not easy, it’s not cheap either! Soon enough, though, Carsley had a ton of money – far more than he would ever need for some waffles. So, he hatched a brilliant, heartwarming plan…
Along with some of his fantasy football friends, the Atlanta salesman decided to pay the bill himself and donate all the money he earned, $1,040, to the server as a tip. Now all that remained was to find the lucky server in question…
Thinner Waffles, Please
Upon heading to his local Waffle House with some friends, Carsley met his server for the day, Mosammat Shumi. As you might imagine, Shumi didn’t expect to have such an exciting day at work amid the pandemic. Most of the customers came to pick up their order and leave! But this Sunday was…different, to say the least. “He told me, ‘I have to eat 20 waffles.’ And I said, ‘Are you sure?'” Shumi recalled.
Everything started off okay at first, with Carsley even enjoying the waffles. However, just seven waffles in, his hope started to fade. “All hope, all hope faded,” he said. “My confidence going in was at an all-time high, and after my first seven, I had zero hope…From there it was just, let’s get this done with.”
Soon enough, Shumi even felt bad for her customer. She said she wished she could have made the waffles thinner! Of course, she had no idea the surprise that waited for her at the end of Carsley’s marathon.
“I Cannot Believe It!”
By the end, Carsley started despising waffles. “It was the single most miserable thing I’ve ever put my body through,” he said. “I love waffles, especially from Waffle House, but I don’t know if I’ll consume another waffle again.”
However, the salesman did it! In total, he downed 18 waffles, spending six more hours in the dinner. The poor customer’s tab was $49, but the tip ended up much bigger – Shumi could not believe it when she saw $1,040 in the tip line. “I cannot believe it! Thank you!” she exclaimed at the time. Even now, she has a hard time processing what happened. “I’m still in shock, I talked to my family, to everybody.” While Carsley could never have known, Shumi needed the money more than anyone. Now, she’ll be able to visit her family in Bangladesh after three years without seeing them.
“It was priceless. One of the better feelings I’ve ever had,” Carsley said in the end.
