In case you’ve simply ignored the news your entire life, you undoubtedly know that the British Royal Family is one of the richest in the world. However, do you know just how much the Royals and ex-Royals spend on themselves? Taking a look at Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s royal receipts, its more than you ever thought…
Meghan Markle’s Royal Receipts
Of course, taking a look at the massive Royal weddings, its no secret that the British Royal Family enjoys spending a little cash on themselves. However, outside of their weddings and landgrabs, Queen Elizabeth prefers if the Royal Family isn’t so splashy with their spending. That’s why Prince William and Prince Harry never had a fleet of fancy cars growing up, unlike other young celebrities.
But all that changed when Meghan Markle arrived. As authors Dylan Howard and Andy Tillett note in their book, Royals At War: The Untold Story of Harry and Meghan’s Shocking Split with the House of Windsor, the actress crossed the pond with a very American “you can’t take it with you” attitude. Soon enough, she had spent thousands on everything from clothes to vegan, ecological friendly paint for her then-unborn son’s, Archie’s, room. “The fact that Meghan splashed so much cash rang alarm bells with the traditionally conservative Queen Elizabeth,” Howard and Tillett write. “Harry’s [spending] transformation is revealed as one of the fundamental factors behind the deep fissure that opened between him and his brother, Prince William.”
She Spent How Much?
So, how much did Markle spend? Well, according to Howard and Tillett’s research, Markle’s clothing royal receipts added up to more than $509,278 in 2018! And that did include her wedding dress, which cost over $100,000. In total, the authors think that Markle alone cost the British taxpayer $1 million in 2018 alone.
Believe it or not, Markle’s spending did not end there! In her first few months of becoming pregnant, she spent nearly $600,000 on maternity clothes and products. Of course, that was just the beginning, as Markle continued spending absorbant amounts of money preparing for little Archie to come. Thankfully, now that they don’t plan on living in the United Kingdom, Prince Harry and Markle have promised to pay the taxpayers back for the money they spent on their Frogmore Cottage nursery.
Meanwhile, while Kate Middleton also spends quite a bit more than you or I, its considerably less than Markle…
The Rest of the Royal Family
Meanwhile, Middleton, in comparison, spends very little – though you and I would be happy for such a Royal allowance! In 2018, while Markle spent over $500,000, Middleton’s Royal receipts added up to just over $85,000. In 2017, she spent nearly double that, $129,560, but still nowhere near her Royal sister-in-law!
As you well know, Middleton’s not the only big spender in the Royal Family, though no one compares to Markle! Still, it seems that Prince Harry has picked up a few habits from his wife. Since their marriage, he’s spent more and more on his health and looks, including $7,000 on acupuncture. Harry also decided to take Markle on a “babymoon” – a vacation celebrating their pregnancy – which cost $40,000. Of course, this was all before the couple officially left the British Royal Family, so they footed the bill.
At the end of the day, it seems that Meghan Markle does not see eye-to-eye with the Queen on spending. So, its probably for the best that she and Prince Harry left the Royal Family. Plus, now they don’t have to follow any of the other annoying Royal Rules!
